Dear Friends,

On November 4, 2009 our dear Dharma sister, Sandra Olney, passed away peacefully at Padma Ling in Berkeley of lung cancer.

During the course of her illness this past year, Sandy received excellent medical care and explored both alternate and traditional ways of healing. Following Sandy's wishes, Nyingma community members helped her with her medical treatments, prepared her meals, offered healing alternatives from many disciplines, and attended to her needs. Throughout this time, Sandy remained positive and focused her energy not just on healing her body, but working toward her spiritual goals and devotional practice.

It was Sandy's wish to keep news of her illness private and those who were caring for her tried to respect this wish. She often spoke of her deep love for her friends and fellow Nyingma Community members, but she wished to limit her contact with the outside world so that she could muster all her strength toward her healing and practice.

Our community has already sponsored prayers at Odiyan and at the holy places of the Buddha, both during Sandy's illness and after her death. As is usual in our tradition, the weeks immediately following a person's passing are set aside as a time for quiet prayer and meritorious actions dedicated to our loved one.

Now that this crucial time has passed, we will hold a short prayer service in appreciation of Sandy on the date of the full moon in December (December 2). Here is the schedule:

7-7:45 PM: Memories of Sandy: Short remarks by those who loved Sandy and treasured her presence will be followed by the recitation of the compassion mantra.

8-9:30 PM: Full Moon Chant: this chant includes period of silent meditation. The merit of the chant will be dedicated to Sandy's welfare in all lifetimes.

Please let us know if you'd like to attend. If you cannot attend, you are welcome to send a short note in remembrance of Sandy. We will read as many of these notes as time allows.

You may also contribute towards prayers on Sandy's behalf or on behalf of others who are ill or have passed away. Visit www.nyingmatrust.org to make an offering, or contribute in person at the Nyingma Institute.

The Nyingma Trust was founded specifically to provide funds for medical and other needs of our full-time working Sangha, such as Sandy. Donations to the Trust help support our community members, some of whom have devoted over forty years of full-time work to preserving the light of the Dharma and the welfare of others through our diverse projects and organizations.

With best wishes,

Judy Rasmussen, Nyingma Trust

BBJ honoring colleague Marge Landry in walk for Breast Cancer

Hi friends & colleagues,

This summer I have committed to walking for two days as a participant in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer event in Los Angeles. It's a big commitment, one that will require me to spend the next several months training and fundraising. But I have wanted to do this for someone for a long time. I am walking in honor of Marge Landry, my 'California' mom. Marge was diagnosed with breast cancer several weeks after my daughter Holly was born. Holly has been our measure of Marge's cancer survivorship. Holly is now 18 and heading off to college, so this is a good time to walk in honor of Marge's 18 years of cancer survival and with hope that Holly never gets breast cancer. I am also walking for all the breast cancer patients I have helped with breast cancer wounds. As a wound nurse, I have often been called in to help support wound healing for wounds caused by breast cancer or breast cancer surgery and therapy. I have seen how devastating breast cancer can be to patients and to my friends. The money I raise will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade to help provide access to care for those that most need it, fund educational programs, and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures. I'll be walking with other UCLA School of Nursing faculty and along with thousands of people, we will walk up to a marathon and a half over a weekend, raising awareness of the cause and educating even more people, and hopefully, inspiring our nursing students.

I can't do it without your help. I'm required to raise at least $1,800 in donations. You can make a donation to my fundraising campaign by checking out my website, www.avonwalk.org/goto/BBJ and clicking on the pink "Donate Now" button. If you prefer to write a check, just contact me and I'll send you the information and form. I also have a picture of Marge and Holly on the website.

As I prepare for this exciting event, I plan to update my webpage frequently so that all my supporters can follow my progress, so please visit often. Also, if you know someone who might be interested in supporting me, please let me know or send this email on, thank you!

Thanks so much,
BBJ

October 22 & 23, 2009, in Baltimore, MD — Home to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

Today's management in acute care and long-term care facilities is faced with seismic changes due to proposed healthcare legislation in Washington, D.C. When that legislation is finalized, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be tasked with implementing new regulations that will impact your business.

To ensure maximum involvement by CMS, which will help clarify how the new and pending reforms will impact you as a provider, HMP Communications has moved the 4th Annual Symposium on Regulatory Issues for Management (SORIM ‘09) to Baltimore, MD, to be in CMS's backyard and close to Washington, D.C.

SORIM ‘09 remains the only conference to gather decision-makers in long-term and acute care together with congressional representatives and officials from central and regional offices of CMS. By attending SORIM ‘09, you will receive the latest updates from key congressional and regulatory decision-makers, who will do their best to answer your questions and concerns.

Faculty: Dr. Mandy Fader, Prof Mikel Gray, Prof Donna Bliss, Prof Barbara Bates-Jensen

The aim of this workshop is to review and discuss the evidence-base for clinical practices designed to prevent and treat incontinence-associated skin damage. The workshop will focus on exploring the mechanisms by which skin is damaged by urine and faeces (including the effects of pressure, friction and shear); reviewing the prevalence of skin health problems in people with incontinence; discussing the reliability, validity and utility of clinical and research tools for assessing wet or damaged skin; examining the evidence to support current methods for preventing and treating skin health problems and identifying guidelines for management of skin health.

This is the first time that WOCN have collaborated with the International Continence Society - come and join us in what promises to be an exciting and rewarding conference.
