WOCN Conference notes:

For all of you attending the WOCN Conference in Minneapolis later this month, please plan on sharing some time with the PCR region at our annual conference get-together Saturday evening June 24th from 6:30pm 8:30pm. It will be held in room 200A of the convention center. This is a great opportunity for all PCR members to get together in a casual atmosphere before the conference starts to renew friendships with colleagues and just relax before the sessions start. Some of our Hawaii affiliate members will also be joining us. Light refreshments will be served.
Don't forget to stop by our PCR booth during exhibit hours to purchase raffle tickets for an anatomical apron, an ipod and Seymour Butts. You can also purchase PCR logo watches. These watches come in 2 sizes and are great gifts not only for you but also for fellow PCR colleagues. Please support our region with your generous donations.
If you haven't signed up to participate in our PCR booth, you can contact Mary Ann Dilloway at 916-989-1415 or email her at . Please consider giving as little as one hour of your time to man our booth and sell raffle tickets and our watches.

WOCN in Minneapolis was a great experience as usual. Excellent speakers, many posters and the largest number of people attending ever.

A recap of a few of the highlights:

A spirited discussion was held during the conference on the WOCN Board exploring the concept of expanding the organization include multi-disciplinary, tri-specialty groups. The other healthcare professionals this would include are PTs and physicians. This is still in the discussion phase and is a project that may take several years of consideration. Many of the people I heard from favored staying with the concept of WOCN remaining a nursing organization and not expanding.

What are your thoughts? This is YOUR organization and whatever the future holds, YOU play a big part in deciding what direction we proceed with in the future. If you haven't been involved in PCR or WOCN, now is the time to let your voice be heard. You can write or email any of the WOCN Board members including Margaret Goldberg, President. They want to know what the membership thinks.

Our PCR get-together on Saturday the 24th was small, but a good time was had by all. I gave the PCR Presidents Award to Piilani Kinimaka, a former PCR member who has worn many "hats" in our region. She has been a mentor, teacher, PCR President, author, speaker and advocate for WOC nursing during her long career. After being involved with PCR for many years, Piilani helped the Hawaii WOC nurses get organized. Piilani is retired now and lives in northern CA. Congratulations and Mahalo (Thank You) for all your hard work and dedication to PCR.

In additional to the PCR Presidents Award, Piilani was recognized by the WOCN with a Volunteer Lifetime Award. Her Hawaii colleagues nominated her for this award and were present at a separate function to see her receive it.

Winners of our PCR booth raffle included: Marilyn Magoffin (iPod), Cathy Downey (Seymour Butts), both from CA and Linda Moore (anatomical apron) from Florida. Thanks too to all the PCR members who volunteered to "man" the booth and sell raffle tickets.

PCR had at least 5 people who were first time attendees to WOCN - Patricia Olivos from Corona; Sharon Wilson from Simi Valley; Cathryn Pauley from Pleasant Hill, Sara Sullivan and Kim Stovall, both from Oceanside. I was very pleased to see many of these ladies at the first time attendee's breakfast that WOCN hosted. We hope to see all of you at our PCR meeting in the fall in Costa Mesa. The Youth Rally held July 8-12, 2006 at San Diego State University was a great success. Pictures are available at rally4youth.org

bike GYGG (Get Your Guts in Gear), 3-day bike race in New York had 78 cyclists on June 9-11, 2006. August 18-21 is the Pacific Northwest ride - not to late to sponsor a cyclist - Contact www.ibdride.org or (645)536-7408.

Gov NIWI (Nurses in Washington Internship) is scheduled for March 11-14, 2007. Scholarships for 2007 are sponsored by Spectrum. Scholarship applications are available at www.nursing-alliance.org/niwi. PCR also sponsors a scholarship.

Don't forget about the Fall Conference in Costa Mesa, CA October 12-14, 2006. Look forward to seeing you at the conference. Information available at www.pcr.org
