A Message From the President

June 2005

Judy Papen,
PCR President

Interesting News from AHRQ Electronic Newsletter, Issue #159, February 4, 2005

4. New Evidence Report on Sexuality and Reproductive Health Following Spinal Cord Injury Available
For people with spinal cord injury, sexuality and reproductive health are high priorities for improving their quality of life, according to a new evidence report prepared by AHRQ's University of Ottawa Evidence-based Practice Center. Advanced fertility techniques for men with spinal cord injury can increase pregnancy rates to above 50 percent per couple, according to the report, which focuses on issues related to fertility, pregnancy rates, and live births in people with spinal cord injury and on issues related to male impotence following spinal cord injury. The report also found that intracavernous injections have a significantly higher efficacy than ViagraŽ (90 percent versus 79 percent). The report was requested by the Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine (sponsored by the Paralyzed Veterans of America). Select to read the
summary. A print copy of the summary and the full report are available by sending an e-mail to ahrqpubs@ahrq.gov.

5. New Evidence Report on Wound Healing Techniques Available
AHRQ released a new evidence report on wound healing techniques that reviews the use of low-level lasers and vacuum-assisted closure for wound care. This report was prepared by AHRQ's Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Technology Evaluation Center Evidence-based Practice Center in Chicago. The report found that the overall evidence was of poor quality for low-level laser, and the available data suggest that the addition of laser therapy does not improve wound healing. The body of evidence was also insufficient to support conclusions about the effectiveness of vacuum-assisted closure, but in most cases the data tended to favor the vacuum-assisted closure group. Additional randomized trials testing vacuum-assisted closure are ongoing. There are approximately 5 million to 7 million incidences of chronic wounds per year in the United States, with annual costs for wound care management of more than $20 billion. This report was requested by America's Health Insurance Plans. Select to read the summary, "Wound Healing Technologies: Low-Level Laser and Vacuum Assisted Closure." A print copy of the summary and the full report are available by sending an e-mail to ahrqpubs@ahrq.gov.

Peer Groups to have a Board Member

One of our newest changes this year is that we have arranged for each of the Peer Groups to have a Board Member to be the liaison between PCR and the Peer Group. This is to assist with communication between the Board of Directors and our members. This will allow us to better satisfy the needs of our members as well as to assist us in passing along information and meeting details to each Peer Group. Please attend the Peer Group closest to you.

Palm Springs Seminar 'Light Your Fire In Your Pursuit of Excellance'

Sept. 30, - Oct. 2nd, 2004

And 'Light Our Fire' is just what we did. We had 71 registrants and 36 vendors participate in this educational event. The presentations presented by our speakers included a variety of topics including Bariatrics, Peripheral Vascular Ulcers, Crohns Disease, Sexual Dysfunction, Burns, Incontinence, a variety of wound care modalities and ostomy care. The evaluations were very positive for all of the speakers, their presentations and the entire event. Our fundraising events were very successful and a fun time was had by all at our Lizard Lounge Dinner Show. A special thank you to all of our Registrants, Vendors, Speakers, Educational committee members, Ways and Means committee and Board of Directors for all of your efforts and support. It is only through our collective efforts that we are able to provide such successful educational programs such as our PCR Seminars. Together We Can Make a Difference.

Who's Who in PCR

Leila Knox is the person chosen for the Who's Who in PCR this month. Leila currently works for Horizon Health and Sub acute Center in Fresno. She has held many positions in her career from Regulatory Compliance ET Nurse Consultant, Administrator, Assistant Director of Nursing Services in Alaska, to Charge Nurse.

She completed her education in University of St. Thomas in Manila Philippines, graduating Cum Laude, went on to the Azusa Pacific University for her MA in Education with a major in Organizational Development. She was certified as an Enterostomal Therapist in 1994 having completed the MD Anderson Program.

Leila became an ET with the encouragement and support of her mentor Gayle Clayton.

Her biggest challenge is making SNF Industry realize the importance of the role of ET nurses in SNF settings to improve quality of life and quality of care.

In her spare time, Leila promotes the artwork of her significant other and at the same time is quite active in the local art community.

A message from Leila to her PCR colleagues is: Be kind to our young, support them, mentor and nurture them. Take the time to smell the roses, and don't forget to tell your loved ones how much you care and love them as often as possible. In our busy lives, we sometimes forget the people that are closest to us.

Leila states that one of the nicest things that happened to her last year was when she was nominated by her staff to be the RN of the Year for Central Valley region to the Coalition of Nursing Organization. She was chosen from 32 nominees to be the CVCNO RN of the year.

What an impressive career you have had Leila, and we are proud to have you as part of the Pacific Coast Region Membership.
