A Message From the President

January 2005

Happy New Year to everyone!

The holidays are over and it is back to work and school for all. I hope each of you is refreshed and ready to make 2005 even better than last year.

The BOD for PCR started off the New Year by transitioning 3 new board members to their respective roles. Joyce Moss is our new Vice President, Marie Ward is our new Educational Coordinator and Dee Dingeman has taken over our website as our Communications Coordinator. Each of these ladies provided the Board with stimulating questions during our 2 days together and we are proud they have decided to join in the fun of participating in the process of running PCR.

During our transition meeting, the Board discussed the goals we set out to accomplish for 2004 and then outlined four goals for 2005, keeping in mind the needs of our membership. Our goals for last year included:

• Formulate the process for each BOD and chairperson role
• Increase the communication to our members via email, support groups, Timely Topics and the website

As a Board, we felt strongly that if our membership wants to take an active part in running our organization, then the process that each officer faces should be spelled out for easier transition into his/her office. Process documents are like policies and procedures. They guide us to where we need to go in an orderly fashion. They spell out the nuts and bolts of what we need to do.

We got about half way done with our process documents, so a renewed emphasis on finishing this task is part of our 2005 goals.

As far as communication was concerned, we made strides in 2004 to update information on our website to make it more relevant to our members. Timeliness is important and we still have a way to go to make our website a timely tool for everyone.

Our second 2005 goal then is to continue to improve our website this year by having all our officers submit information on a monthly basis. Each Board member is assigned a month to submit information, articles, etc. If you have information to share, we welcome your input. Please submit anything of interest to Dee Dingeman at: ddingeman@yahoo.com or via our website on the "Contact Us" tab. We also will be updating our support group list on the web so you will have a local person to contact and collaborate with.

Our last 2 goals are:

• Review our by-lays and policies and procedures on an annual basis at the transition meeting
• Maximize financial PCR investments

This coming year your Board wants to strengthen our infrastructure so new officers will have an even easier transition. We are hoping that with these changes, more members will want to take an active role in running the organization. We are always looking for new blood and vitality to keep PCR running smoothly. We found it on our 3 new members. Will you be next? I sure hope so.

Dive right in, the PCR waters are alive and well and will prosper in 2005.

Judy Papen,
PCR President

Officers Corner

Welcome to a new feature on our website called Officers Corner. One of PCR goals for this year is increasing communication to our membership and other interested visitors to our website.

With that in mind, each of the Board of Directors along with our committee chairpersons, have committed to taking one month of the year and presenting a variety of information to you. We hope you will be enlightened, entertained, stimulated, and enjoy the variety of subjects brought to you each month.

I am starting the Officers Corner for January with:

The Board is pleased to have Donna Lockhart back as our Treasurer for the remainder of 2005. When Liz Hiltabidel declined to serve out the remainder of Donna's term due to her extensive commitments with the UOA Youth Rally, Donna stepped back up to the plate and asked to be reconsidered for this position. In her words, "I want to complete the goals of my term". PCR is very grateful to have Donna back at the helm. Her knowledge of financial matters and attention to detail make her a valuable officer to our organization. Welcome back, Donna!

WOCN scholarship awarded to PCR member - Congratulations to Jocelyn Duffey! She was recently awarded a Rupert B. Turnbull scholarship by WOCN. Did you know that in addition to WOCN scholarships, each year PCR awards scholarship money to help a PCR member achieve educational goals by funding the Gladys Frey and Lee Greer scholarships? PCR members are eligible for these monies. If you are interested in receiving a WOCN or PCR scholarship, please contact one of the Board of Directors for more information and qualifications. Remember - this money is for your benefit. And scholarships are another reason to be a WOCN and PCR member.

Don't forget to attend our March PCR meeting in Reno, NV - Brochure details are noted on our website. If you did not receive a brochure in the mail, download the form and send it in to Marie Ward, our Education Coordinator. You can also give it to a friend or colleague. Participation is open to all interested nurses and other healthcare professionals, not just PCR members. Spread the word! Let's make this conference a great one with your participation.

This is the first installment of our newly created Officers Corner. Stay tuned for a variety of monthly features. If you would like to contribute a noteworthy idea, please contact our communications chairperson, Dee Dingeman at ddingeman@yahoo.com.

Have a great year - hope to see you back at our site on monthly basis.

Quote for the month - "The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same" - Carlos Castaneda
